Authentic Bush Namibia

“… here I am human, here I may be” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Twelve-day authentic culinary adventure and tour of Southwest Africa; perhaps the most fascinating region in Africa – the cradle of humanity.

The international enologist Roland Birr, a recognised connoisseur of culture and the region for three decades, takes you on an authentic and above all traditional-culinary adventure on open log fires from Cape Town through the South African semi-desert plateau Tankwa-Karoo to a private game, cattle and Sheep farm in the south of Namibia, then back along the Orange River through the diamond fields and Namaqualand along the west coast back to Cape Town … as in all his travels “off the beaten track”, far from any tourist path or game-parks.

Through its 30-year network of sustainable agriculture, local food and commerce, you will experience the original Southwest African mentality, way of life and culture against the backdrop of awe-inspiring natural beauty and almost untouched flora and wildlife.

Absolute silence, endless vistas, sandy roads and open semi-desert landscapes; millions of years old mountain ranges, dormant volcanoes, dried riverbeds, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, wild-romantic log fires and the inspiring mysticism of South West Africa bring peace and tranquility to the soul.

The accommodation is “simple African style” on a 12,800-acre private farm in the Karas region in southern Namibia. Sleep in single or double rooms with en-suite shower / WC in stone and wooden cabins throughout the trip (see menu item “Accommodation”).

A key focus of the trip is on the authentically prepared regional specialties such as the different antelope species Springbok, Kudu, Eland and Oryx, but also ostrich, lamb and Bonsmara cattle – all of their own farm. The fish-rich waters off the Southwest African coasts provide us with native fish species such as kingklip, snoek, hottentot fish, cod and the legendary Cape lobster – all cooked traditionally on open wood fire.

Wines of great South African winemakers of the various Cape Wine Kingdom growing areas and the finest crafted South African Fynbos-Gin interpretations accompany the outdoor kitchen around the clock … and of course we always have ice cold Namibian and South African beer on board …. (and water)!

The itinerary will first bring us to our first camp in the Tankwa-Karoo, from where we will spend two nights in the “Waterfall Camp” at the Augrabies Falls, where the Kalahari and Nama-Karoo Desert meet. Continuing along the Namibian border north to Grunau in the Karas region to our base camp on a 12,800-acre private game, cattle and sheep farm in the middle of the semi-desert in southern Namibia, near the Fish River Canyon, the second largest Canyon of the world.

Here we stay for four nights and take in the unique natural beauty with a deep insight into a traditional game farm, with mountain wilderness walks, game drive and authentic wilderness lunches, dinners and campfires.

Afterwards, we continue along the course of the Orange River through the diamond fields towards the coast.

On the way we spend a night in the River Camp on the Orange River with refreshment in, and on the water. We cross the border to South Africa the next day and stay right on the beach in authentic diamond diver huts in Namaqualand. We continue on the west coast to the south and another overnight stop at the coastal camp in Lambertsbaai with a traditional seafood outdoor cooking experience (Muisbosskerm) right on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean.

After a late breakfast, we head south towards Veldrif with a west-coast lunch in the “Bokkomlaan” and overnight on the last evening on private farm in Stellenbosch with “farewell outdoor cooking workshop”.

The “The Fifth Quarter” trip AUTHENTIC BUSH NAMIBIA takes place on fixed dates, but can also be booked individually for closed groups.
